Arsenal ties 2-2 with Man United in Premier League - Gallas strikes late as Arsenal hold United

LONDON - William Gallas scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer to give Arsenal a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday that kept his side top of the Premier League.
The French defender, who had given United the lead with an own goal in first-half stoppage time, rescued an Arsenal side who were heading for defeat after Cristiano Ronaldo put the champions 2-1 up from close range eight minutes from time.
Arsenal, who were rewarded for persevering in a tense encounter, stay top of the table with 27 points from their 11 matches. United remain second on 27 points from 12 games, having scored fewer goals.
The draw at the Emirates Stadium was Arsenal's 25th match in all competitions without defeat, a club record.
Arsenal were in command throughout the first half but United made the better start and went ahead at the very end of the first half when Gallas turned the ball past his own goalkeeper Manuel Almunia as he tried to block a close-range shot from England striker Wayne Rooney.
Arsenal were level however within three minutes of the second half when Willy Sagna pulled the ball back for Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas to slot the ball into the corner scoring his 11th goal of the season.
United's Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar appeared to have done enough to block a shot from Emmanuel Adebayor, but the ball ran free to right back Bacary Sagna whose quick ball gave Fabregas time and space to pick his spot in the bottom corner.
C. Ronaldo then looked to have won it for United with a cool finish after a sweet passing move involving substitute Louis Saha and Patrice Evra split the Arsenal defence wide open.
But Gallas made up for his own goal in stoppage time, with the captain steering the ball across the line and getting the goal awarded, despite the ball being whipped back.
Evra almost gave Arsenal the equalizer when he sliced the ball onto his own crossbar but United looked to have won it when a scramble in the box saw Gallas free on the back post and his superb finish was ruled over the line by referee Howard Webb.

Fabregas ensures Arsenal draw with Liverpool in Premiership football

The draw ensured both teams maintained their unbeaten league records but it was Arsenal who scored the moral victory, standing up to Liverpool's robust, determined display to demonstrate that Wenger's emerging young side have the steel to maintain their impressive start.
The London club now sit above Manchester United having scored more goals than Sir Alex Ferguson's side and with a game in hand.
For Liverpool there was the disappointment of squandering a late lead but after a troubled week, Rafael Benitez and his players will take heart from their display despite remaining six points adrift of the league leaders.
Benitez had found himself under growing pressure after the midweek Champions League defeat against Besiktas in Istanbul that cast grave doubts over his side's ability to progress to the knock-out stages of Europe's premier competition.
Domestically, Liverpool's expected title challenge has so far flattered to deceive and with Arsenal, Manchester United and now Chelsea all moving through the gears, the Merseysiders desperately needed a positive result to boost flagging confidence.
Benitez delivered a clear statement of intent with a team selection that included record signing Fernando Torres at the head of a three-pronged attack alongside Dirk Kuyt and Andriy Voronin.
And the fiercely competitive opening - summed up by Voronin's late lunge on Fabregas that earned the Ukraine forward a yellow card - demonstrated the importance Benitez and his players were placing on a fixture crucial to their early season ambitions.
That combative approach quickly drew reward with Gerrard firing Liverpool ahead after just six minutes after Fabregas, still smarting from Voronin's challenge, upended Xabi Alonso as Arsenal struggled to snuff out a home attack.
Presented with a free kick just outside the Arsenal area, Gerrard finished ruthlessly, receiving a short ball from John Arne Riise and driving a powerful shot through the flimsy defensive wall and past a stranded Manuel Almunia.
Arsenal reacted in customary style, refusing to panic and weaving neat passing patterns all over the pitch that eventually forced Liverpool onto the back foot.
But as so often the case last season with Wenger's side, they lacked a cutting edge and apart from a 17th minute chance that fell to Emmanual Adebayor and was expertly blocked by home keeper Jose Reina, Arsenal struggled to carve open the home back-four.
In fact it Almunia who was the busier keeper and was forced into an excellent full length save to deny Gerrard a second when the England midfielder fired a dipping half-volley from the edge of the box.
Benitez's decision to restore Torres appeared to have back-fired by the interval when the former Atletico Madrid man, still clearly struggling with a groin problem, was replaced by Peter Crouch.
The change did little to disturb Liverpool's efforts with the substitute quickly forcing another smart save from Almunia. Arsenal's efforts at the other end, though, were far less impressive and fears grew this would not be their day when Emmanuel Eboue fired against a post and Fabregas blasted the rebound wide in front of an open goal.
Arsenal's controlled pressure began to tell as the game wore on with cracks finally beginning to appear in the previously stout home defences.
And the visitors were finally rewarded 10 minutes from time when Alexander Hleb's weaving run down the left flank stretched the Liverpool back-four. The Belarus international slipped the ball into the path of Fabregas who stabbed the ball past Reina.

Gunners power on as Spurs add to Liverpool woes

Robin van Persie fired Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League on Sunday but Liverpool's title ambitions suffered a fresh setback when they were held at home by struggling Tottenham.
Embattled Spurs boss Martin Jol must have thought his side had pulled off a famous victory before Fernando Torres produced a last-minute header to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw they scarcely deserved.
Robbie Keane had scored twice either side of half-time to give Spurs the lead after Andriy Voronin had given Liverpool an early lead.
Rafael Benitez's side are now six points adrift of the league leaders and another uninspiring performance at home will have done little to stem growing scepticism about the Spaniard's leadership in the wake of the midweek defeat by Marseille which has left them battling for survival in the Champions League.
In contrast, things could hardly be going better for Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger's side made it 10 wins in a row in all competitions with a 3-2 win over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium.
Van Persie's second goal of the afternoon secured three points which lifted Arsenal back above Manchester United, who had beaten Wigan 24 hours earlier.
Arsenal had established a two-goal lead inside a quarter of an hour through a superb free-kick from Van Persie and a close-range strike by Philippe Senderos.
But a Ross Wallace shot and a Kenwyne Jones header got Sunderland back on level terms and Roy Keane's side were a little unlucky not to take something from a match they finished with 10 men as a result of the late red card given to Paul McShane for a two-footed challenge on Alexander Hleb.
Salomon Kalou scored Chelsea's first goal in five league outings and that proved enough to secure a 1-0 win at Bolton, their first in the league since last month's departure of Jose Mourinho.
The three points will have come as a welcome boost for new manager Avram Grant but there was no sign of the expansive attacking football the former Israel manager has pledged to introduce in line with the requirements of the club's owner Roman Abramovich.
Another two superb goals by Brazilian Elano helped Manchester City to a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough and kept Sven-Goran Eriksson's side in third place, just one point behind their crosstown rivals United.
An own goal by Chris Riggott provided City's other goal with Ben Hutchinson's first goal for Boro coming near the end when the home side were already sure of maintaining their 100 percent league record at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Michael Owen came off the bench for Newcastle just days after undergoing stomach muscle surgery in Germany and, predictably, marked his return to action with a goal as the Magpies beat Everton 3-2.
Nicky Butt had opened the scoring for Newcastle. Andrew Johnson, with his first goal since February, equalised but a superb long-range effort from Emre Belozoglu and Owen's late header made the points safe before an own goal by goalkeeper Shay Given made it 3-2 at the final whistle.
Elsewhere, Blackburn beat Birmingham 2-1 with a first-half goal from the impressive David Bentley and a Benni McCarthy penalty. Cameron Jerome pulled one back for Birmingham but Steve Bruce's side were unable to conjure up an equaliser in the closing stages.
Reading bounced back from last week's 7-4 defeat at Portsmouth by beating Derby 1-0 to pull away from the relegation zone. A second-half header from Ireland striker Kevin Doyle condemned the bottom side to their sixth defeat in nine matches this season.

Arsenal hand Wenger a 70 million pound transfer kitty

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been promised an enormous 70 million pound (142 million dollars) transfer kitty after Arsenal revealed themselves to be one of Europe's richest clubs.
Figures unveiled on Monday show the Premiership leaders' move to the Emirates Stadium has driven a near 50 percent increase in turnover to more than 200 million pounds for the year ending May 31, 2007.
That sum means they are only edged into second place in the continent's rich list by Real Madrid.
But with operating profit of 51.2 million, up 274 percent, the Gunners now have a level of profitability far in excess of Real.
Match-day revenues of 3.1 million per game at their new 60,000 home are double those generated at Highbury, and have seen the Gunners leapfrog main domestic rivals Manchester United and Chelsea - whose respective turnover for the same period was 167.8 million and 152.8 million.
The revelation of Arsenal's wealth is an ample response to those critics who questioned the effect the cost of relocation to Ashburton Grove would have on the club, and in particular Wenger's transfer funds.
But after reiterating that Wenger did not spend all his budget this summer, delighted managing director Keith Edelman claimed the Frenchman would now have previously unheard of sums available to reinforce his squad.
"I think we are in a very good position," Edelman said.
"Clearly Arsene's performance and the team's performance on the pitch has been outstanding, obviously backed up by our very strong financial position.
"We gave Arsene a budget in the summer and he didn't even spend all of it on transfers and hopefully we'll be able to carry that forward into future years."
He added: "We have got plenty of financial firepower to makes the transfers Arsene wants to make.
"We had over 70 million of cash at the end of the year and if Arsene wants to spend that money we will make it available."
The results posted this morning have been achieved despite the lack of a mega-rich foreign owner, the source to which most rivals have turned to increase their clout.
With Red and White Holdings Limited, backed by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, recently increasing their stake in the club to around 21 percent, rumours have abounded of a possible takeover bid.
But Edelman insists the results show there is no reason to change the way in which the club is run.
"We think it's very important as a board that the club develops revenues it generates itself and is not dependent on people putting money in every year, because that's not a very stable basis on which to run a club," he told the club's website.
"We regard ourselves as custodians of the club and fans as well. It's important that the club does have a stable financial base."
He added: "If you look at the shareholders and the look at the board, we are all here because we love the club. Yes we want to run it well as a business, but only because we want to be a great club.
"That could be contrasted with what could be called financial owners, who come to purchase clubs to make money out of them and they don't have that affinity to be a rabid fan - to live, breathe and eat Arsenal Football Club."
With the new Premier League TV deal yet to be reflected in their figures and the Gunners also set to launch their own TV channel in the new year, it seems everything is in place for the financial success to continue.
Gaming world braces for industry 'killer' Halo 3

The gaming world braced Monday for the launch of "Halo 3," expected to help Microsoft and its XBox 360 console in its battle against Nintendo's Wii and Sony's Playstation 3.
Microsoft was to release the game in the United States at 12:01 am Tuesday (0401 GMT) and in 37 countries by the end of the week with a series of high-profile events.
"With nary a pirate, a spider or a wand in sight, day-one sales of the highly anticipated video game are expected to shatter entertainment sales records and top the biggest entertainment launches of all time," Microsoft said in a statement, comparing the event to releases of "Harry Potter" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."
"By the end of the week, fans in 37 countries will be playing the game Wired magazine recently called 'a cultural touchstone, a Star Wars for the thumb-stick generation.'"
Microsoft said it had received a record 1.5 million pre-orders for the game, and would hold midnight launch events at 10,000 retailers across the United States featuring contests and appearances by local celebrities and athletes.
Many retailers were to hold special openings for the sale, and some expected customers to queue up for the first copies of the game, which sells for 60 dollars for the basic version and 130 dollars for a premium edition.
The game developed by Microsoft and its partner Bungie Studios is the third in the Halo Trilogy, a so-called "first-person shooter" action game that has been a big success.
Halo 3 "has further mastered the art of marrying fantastic gameplay with the intangibles that make the experience extraordinary for gamers, evoking incredible emotion through its story and character development," said Shane Kim, vice president of Microsoft Game Studios.
"That emotion is at the heart of what makes this more than a game and why 'Halo' connects with its audience in the way other great stories like 'Star Wars' resonated with theirs."
Gaming review site MetaCritic gave the new game a 96 rating out of 100 and says it provides "the thrilling conclusion" to the events begun in the first Halo.
"The Master Chief is returning to Earth to finish the fight. The Covenant occupation of Earth has uncovered a massive and ancient object beneath the African sands -- an object whose secrets have yet to be revealed," MetaCritic said.
"Earth's forces are battered and beaten. The Master Chief's AI companion Cortana is still trapped in the clutches of the Gravemind -- a horrifying Flood intelligence, and a civil war is raging in the heart of the Covenant. This is how the world ends."
Analyst Michael Gartenberg at Jupiter Research said Halo 3 "will likely be a killer app," or application, for XBox 360, which has been struggling against the Playstation 3 and Wii from Microsoft's Japanese rivals.
"I've had a chance to play with a review copy for a bit and now the embargo is lifted it's safe for me to say, this is going to be a monster hit for Microsoft and it's the type of game that will sell systems, probably a lot of them," Gartenberg said.
"Halo 3 has been one of the most anticipated titles in the history of gaming and Microsoft and Bungie delivered well."
Microsoft recently cut the US price for its Xbox 360 to better compete with the Wii and PS3 and its reputation was tarnished by a design defect that Microsoft says it has fixed. Microsoft set aside a billion dollars in its most recent fiscal quarter to repair or replace flawed consoles.
Microsoft has shipped 11.6 million Xbox 360s since the consoles debuted in of 2005. But Nintendo is riding a wave of popularity and has been selling Wii consoles as fast as it makes them since sales began in November 2006.
Still, XBox 360 has outsold its key competitors in the US market so far this year, according to data from NPD Group.
David Cole, an analyst with DFC Intelligence, said the game may help Microsoft but is aimed mainly at those who already are committed to the platform.
"Microsoft's biggest challenge is to grow beyond that 'converted' base," he said.
"The buzz around Halo 3 is truly unprecedented, and while many want to take sides around the next-generation console wars, I'm more of an optimist who thinks this launch will be good for the entire industry," said David Riley at NPD.
"It's exactly what this industry needs to kick off the holiday shopping season."
